9-Hole Courses in Greater Boston

Hello friends, welcome to another Address the Ball blog post!

Today, we are going to dive into my favorite 9-hole courses in the Greater Boston area.
For this list, I'll focus on my top-5 public courses that everyone can access. Let's start it up!

1. Patriot Golf Course (Bedford, MA)

Located on the grounds of the VA Medical Center in Bedford (and adjacent to Middlesex Community College), this course is underrated in my opinion. It has a military course feel: straightforward, affordable, low-frills, and very walkable. Despite the 9-hole layout, it’s more demanding than the yardage suggests. (2,600-2,900 yards)

While this course may be short on paper, the greens are small and fairly protected with holes that will require some target golf instead of a bomb-and-gouge approach. If you queue up a round at Patriot, get ready for a solid test of your irons and wedges.

The pace of play here is faster than a lot of other courses, but you can still have an outlier round that can take over 2 hours to make the loop.

This isn’t a championship-level monster, but it can punish sloppy approach shots and a lack of accuracy off the tee.

2. Fresh Pond Golf Course (Cambridge, MA)

This is one of the coolest municipal courses in Greater Boston. Fresh Pond is a historic 9-hole Donald Ross layout tucked into urban Cambridge beside the reservoir. This is a rare city muni that actually has character and credibility (and some great holes).

This tight, strategic routing has a surprisingly good variety for only 9 holes. With challenging par 3’s, par 4’s that require accuracy off the tee, and par 5’s that provide ample scoring opportunities.

This course is only about 3,000 yards, but it plays smarter than longer munis because of the angles, small greens, and Ross-style strategy.

Expect very busy tee sheets, lots of walkers, and a relaxed, tightly managed pace-of-play environment. Also, prepare for a headache with the parking situation, remember, you’re in Cambridge…

Bring precision when you play Fresh Pond, and maybe (just maybe) keep the driver in the bag on a few holes. Take a look down toward the reservoir from the 3rd tee box, and enjoy one of the best views at a Boston area public track.

3. Woburn Country Club (Woburn, MA)

Another traditional municipal course, this time you find yourself tucked in suburban Woburn.
Expect narrow fairways, greens that can show some speed in the summer months, and a tree-lined layout.

Quirky holes are all placed all around Woburn, and you’ll even see a few power lines overhead.
Enjoy a walkable 9, experience some elevation changes, and just play your game. The course is a good value, and the staff will always make you feel welcome.

It’s great to get out here and see the local youth continuing the tradition of an after-school or summer 9-hole round.

This course is only 2,600+ yards from the back tees, with a par of 34 on the scorecard. Don’t let this fool you, accuracy is a requirement if you want to score well here. With bent grass greens and undulating fairways, it’s easy to get off track here.

4. Unicorn Golf Course (Stoneham, MA)

Unicorn is mostly known as a “working golfers' muni”, this place brings out all types of golfers. You’ll see a few people experiencing their first round ever, and people who have called Unicorn their home course for years, all during the same round.

It’s fairly open off the tee compared to tighter layouts in the area, with a mix of shorter scoring holes and a few tougher par 4’s. The conditions are usually exceptional given the amount of traffic it sees regularly.

Tee times are relatively easy to book, and it’s friendly for mid to high handicap golfers. Bring your casual golfer friends and enjoy! It’s not hyper-strategic with the course architecture; it’s all about playable golf and accessibility at Unicorn.

Be aware of a heavy play volume, and sometimes the pace can be slow. If you want a no-pressure golf day, this fits the mold perfectly.

5. Maynard Golf Course (Maynard, MA)

Maynard is one of the coolest hidden gem muni’s just west of Greater Boston. It has more character than many people expect, and it plays tougher than the scorecard leads you to believe.

Tree-lined fairways and bent grass greens on a compacted routing add to the classic New England feel. The course rewards accuracy and smart positioning, as opposed to pure distance.

You can usually find this course in solid condition, with an affordable price point. It’s less chaotic than some Boston munis, but you can run the risk of running into a high school golf team practicing.

The old school design has character, with uneven fairways, significant elevation change, and thumbprint greens. It’s a shorter course by modern standards, and can feel very tight if you’re spraying the ball. Give it a shot if you’re looking for a traditional layout that is easier than most in the area to walk.  Show some love to any of these courses the next time you're looking for a casual 9-hole round! Stay tuned for the next blog...
